Everybody in America and Israel know the "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" chants that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his predecessor popularized. Much lesser known (and seemingly withheld) is the information that Hassan Rouhani is a liberal figure...at least in the Iranian context. And he got voted in.
Hassan Rouhani's 2015 tweet is at the bottom, and in 2013, he also tweeted "As the sun is about to set here in #Tehran I wish all Jews, especially Iranian Jews, a blessed Rosh Hashanah." Hassan Rouhani is a character who wants peace. This makes him a better leader than some even in the United States...including some at the recent Republican presidential debate. Some people don't want peace, and want to continue a grudge forever.
Those who don't want peace include all kinds of people, ranging from other Iranians to Israelis to Americans to people in every other country around the globe. We have to neutralize their influence. Many ridiculed Rouhani and said that they don't believe his sincerity because his country wants Israel to be destroyed. But what that does is cause more division and it does not defuse the situation. Saying "Thank you" or just keeping your mouth shut (or fingers off the keyboard) do a lot more to help the world. Sure, Iran has problems, but remember that Rouhani is not the all-powerful dictator. He is the president who is still under the "Supreme Leader". For him to even go this far is sticking his neck out and asking for trouble at home. But he had the courage to try to bring the world together, so I hope that random internet commenters acknowledge that. I mean, for me, I don't even share Abrahamic roots. For all I know, Rouhani thinks that I will burn in Hell forever when I die. I don't know that, but it is possible. Yet even I see his genuine effort to make the world a more peaceful place, and in the end, that is what matters.
